Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water (about 110°F / 43°C)
  • 2 1/4 tsps active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 2 tbsps sugar
  • 2 tbsps melted butter
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for kneading)
  • Vegetable oil for frying (about 2 inches deep)

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let stand for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  • Add oil, salt, and 2½ cups of flour. Stir until dough forms. Add remaining flour as needed until dough is soft and slightly sticky but not wet.
  • On a lightly floured surface, knead 3–4 minutes until smooth.
  • Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for 45–60 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  • Punch down dough, divide into 12 pieces, and stretch each into a 4–5 inch round (¼ inch thick).
  • Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C). Fry each scone 1–2 minutes per side, until golden brown and puffed.
  • Place on paper towels to drain.
  • Enjoy warm with honey butter.
