  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp cloves (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 cups unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch pan.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, spices, and salt.
  • In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg.
  • Stir in applesauce and vanilla.
  • Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, mixing just until combined. Fold in any add-ins.
  • Pour batter into prepared pan and spread evenly.
  • Bake 35–40 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Cool before serving.
