Tomato Soup & Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

Tomato Soup & Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

There’s something special about gathering around the table with a warm bowl of tomato soup and a crispy, cheesy grilled cheese sandwich. This classic combination is easy to make, budget-friendly, and loved by kids and adults alike. Whether you’re enjoying a cozy family lunch or a simple weeknight dinner, homemade tomato soup and grilled cheese bring comfort, delicious flavors, and a little taste of home to every bite.

With just a few basic ingredients, you can create a homemade meal that is comforting, satisfying, and sure to bring a little warmth to your day.

It’s the kind of dinner I make when the weather is chilly, the day has been long, or I simply want something warm and comforting without spending hours in the kitchen. There’s something about dipping a buttery, golden grilled cheese into a bowl of creamy tomato soup that never gets old.

I like my tomato soup smooth, rich, and just a little bit creamy. The grilled cheese needs to be golden and crisp on the outside, with plenty of melty cheese inside. Put the two together and you have the perfect cozy meal.

The best part? It’s simple enough for a weeknight but feels special every time I make it.

Why I Love This Recipe

The soup comes together with pantry-friendly ingredients, and letting the tomatoes simmer with the onion and garlic gives it so much flavor. A little cream at the end makes it silky without making it too heavy.

And then there’s the grilled cheese. I usually go with cheddar, but you can absolutely mix in whatever cheese you have on hand. The key is cooking it slowly enough that the bread gets beautifully crisp while the cheese has time to melt.

INGREDIENTS…

  • butter or olive oil
  • yellow onion
  • garlic
  • whole peeled tomatoes
  • vegetable or chicken broth
  • sugar
  • dried basil
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • heavy cream

GRILLED CHEESE INGREDIENTS…

  • your favorite sandwich bread
  • softened butter
  • shredded or sliced cheddar cheese
  • mayonnaise, optional

A Few Little Tips….

Don’t rush the onions. Giving them a few minutes to soften makes a noticeable difference in the finished soup.

For the grilled cheese, medium-low heat is your friend. It might take an extra minute or two, but you’ll get that gorgeous golden crust without burning the bread before the cheese melts.

And don’t be afraid to make extra grilled cheese. Around here, there is no such thing as too much grilled cheese.

It’s simple, cozy, and exactly the kind of meal I want when I need a little comfort in a bowl.

Pour the hot tomato soup into a bowl and garnish it with fresh basil, cracked black pepper, or a small drizzle of cream. Cut the grilled cheese diagonally and serve it alongside the soup.

And don’t underestimate the best part: dipping the crispy, cheesy sandwich directly into the tomato soup. The crunchy bread, melted cheese, and rich tomato flavor create the perfect combination of textures and flavors.

Tomato soup and grilled cheese prove that comfort food doesn’t need to be complicated. With a handful of basic ingredients and a little time, you can create a meal that’s warm, filling, and nostalgic.

Whether you’re making lunch on a chilly afternoon or looking for an easy weeknight dinner, this classic pairing is hard to beat.
