Easy Homemade Applesauce For The Whole Family

Easy Homemade Applesauce For The Whole Family

There’s nothing quite like a big pot of Homemade Applesauce simmering on the stove. The sweet smell of apples and cinnamon fills the kitchen, and before long, everyone seems to wander in asking, “Is it ready yet?”

Whether you’re using apples from your backyard tree, a farmers market haul, or a bag of apples from the grocery store, this recipe is a delicious way to turn them into a naturally sweet snack or side dish.

The best part about homemade applesauce is how simple it is. You don’t need fancy ingredients or special equipment. Just apples, a little water, cinnamon, and perhaps a touch of sugar if your apples need it.

It’s also a wonderful recipe to make together. Kids can help wash the apples, measure the cinnamon, or mash the cooked apples once they’re soft. Older kids can help with peeling and chopping under supervision.

Why Make Applesauce at Home?

Homemade applesauce gives you complete control over the flavor and sweetness. You can make it smooth or chunky, add plenty of cinnamon or keep it simple, and adjust the sweetness to suit your taste.

It’s also a great way to use up apples that are starting to get a little soft. Different varieties can be mixed together, creating a more interesting flavor than using just one kind.

Ingredients…..

  • apples
  • water
  • cinnamon
  • brown sugar or maple syrup, optional
  • lemon juice, optional

Choose naturally sweet apples if you want to reduce the amount of added sugar. A combination of sweet and tart apples can make especially flavorful applesauce.

Tips for the Best Applesauce

Mix your apples…. Combining tart and sweet varieties creates a balanced flavor.

Don’t add too much water…. The apples release plenty of liquid as they cook, so start with a small amount.

Keep it chunky or make it smooth….. There’s no wrong texture. A potato masher gives you rustic, chunky applesauce, while blending creates a silky-smooth result.

Taste before sweetening.…. Depending on the apples you use, you may not need any added sugar at all.

Homemade applesauce is delicious on its own, but there are plenty of ways to use it. Serve it warm alongside roasted pork or chicken, spoon it over pancakes or oatmeal, or enjoy it cold as an afternoon snack.

It can also be used as an ingredient in muffins, cakes, quick breads, and other baked goods.

Storing Applesauce

Let the applesauce cool before transferring it to an airtight container. It can be refrigerated for several days. For longer storage, homemade applesauce can also be frozen in freezer-safe containers, leaving a little room for expansion.

A Simple Taste of Homemade Comfort

Homemade applesauce is one of those recipes that proves good food doesn’t have to be complicated. With a few apples, a little cinnamon, and some time on the stove, you can make a warm, flavorful treat that the whole family will enjoy.

So gather the family, grab a basket of apples, and put a big pot on the stove. Homemade applesauce is easy, delicious, and best of all, made for sharing. Your kitchen will smell amazing, and you may never want store-bought applesauce again.

Ingredients

  • 10-12 apples
  • 1/2–1 cup water or apple cider for a richer flavor
  • 1-2 tsps cinnamon
  • 2-3 tbsps brown sugar or maple syrup, optional
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice, optional

Instructions

  • Start by peeling, coring, and chopping the apples.
  • Place the apples in a large pot and add the water and cinnamon. Cover and let everything simmer over medium-low heat for about 25–30 minutes, stirring every so often.
  • As the apples cook, they’ll become soft and fragrant. Once they’re tender enough to mash easily, take the pot off the heat.
  • Now comes the fun part. Mash the apples with a potato masher for chunky, rustic applesauce. I use a food processor.
  • Give it a taste. If the apples are already sweet, leave it as-is. Otherwise, stir in a little brown sugar or maple syrup.
